About US

We are four students from the Universidad de las Américas Puebla, on the careers of Politics Sciences, Civil Engineerings, Digital Animation and computing; thought this blog we want people to know hoe poverty and criminality are correlated.

As a project for one of our classes, we gather information from different sources and express our own opinion on the matter of poverty and criminality. We work together and discuss one of our main crisis in our country, and we make this blog to bring you information and discuss how we could change our country actual situation.

Final Essay

Poverty and criminality are very sensitive topics which they are very complicated separated and a lot more when they are together. In this website we try to focus on the correlation between these 2 and we find that there is some kind of direct connection as poverty can lead to crime very easily since the people living this reality, do not have any income and they need to get money in order to survive, so they turn to crime in order to survive their every day life.

We find that this topic is really a debatable one and many experts have different opinions, we also find that this opinions often left to in which time they share their points since poverty and crime evolve as humanity does. As we explore many resources in our research, we find that most experts believe that the correlation exist but they way too different opinions once they share the reason why, most of them believe that this topic goes hand to hand with urbanization, education, economy, the government ,and corruption and also how a country is manage and if they are a undeveloped country. A few second world countries and most of the third world countries do not have the resources to manage this situation and it is very visible how this countries share this two characteristics of poverty and crime.

We come to a conclusion that where there is poverty or extreme poverty, there will be crime as a direct correlation between this 2 topics is evident. We mostly back up this with everything we have learned and that it makes total sense, since the countries with less poverty the barely have crime and you can see how will people behave if they are poor, it all depends on the situation of a person, among other factors that we mentioned before like education and corruption.

Collectively, the Terms: The Master Terms, together with any Additional Terms, form a binding legal agreement between you and Creative Commons in relation to your use of the Services. Collectively, this legal agreement is referred to below as the “Terms.”

Human-readable summary of Sec 1: These terms, together with any special terms for particular websites, create a contract between you and Creative Commons. The contract governs your use of all websites operated by Creative Commons, unless a particular website indicates otherwise. These human-readable summaries of each section are not part of the contract, but are intended to help you understand its terms.

All new and/or revised Terms take effect immediately and apply to your use of the Services from that date on, except that material changes will take effect 30 days after the change is made and identified as material. Your continued use of any Services after new and/or revised Terms are effective indicates that you have read, understood, and agreed to those Terms.

Survey

We made a survey to random people about our topic with 7 questions that they can choose to answer with a yes or no or to explain their point of view, this help us to see what do people that do not know much about poverty and crime think in general when it comes to these serious and complicated topics

The questions we elaborate for people to answer it were: 1. Do you think poverty and crime have a direct correlation? Optional Explanation (OE) 2. Do you think that poverty and crime have a correlation only in certain regions? OE 3. Do you think that crime and poverty are related to the government? OE 4. Do you think that crime and poverty are related to economy or education? OE 5. How much importance do you think people give to crime and poverty? 6. When do you think the situation regarding crime and poverty got worst? 7. Do you think the crime and poverty rate would decrease or increase in the upcoming years? OE

With this survey we gave it to different types of social classes in order to make it more interesting and to get variations in our data, with these idea in mind we applied them to people in the high, medium-high, medium, low-medium, and low classes, 2 persons each class.

We made a chart to represent the 7 answers in every question (the number 1 represents a yes or a lot and the number 2 represents a no or a few), this to compare what do the different social classes express in the questions. In question 6 the number 1 will represent if it was before the last change of government and the number 2 will represent if it was after the last change of government; this is explain like this in order to have numerical values in the chart and also to have an idea of at what time does the situation change.

Poverty and Crime blog, Graph#1

The results in graph #1 show different answers and variations regarding the social classes, the survey make what we expect it that it was to have different points of view; besides, the answers in the chart only show concrete answers of only 2 options, the personal points will be shown later.

This survey will help us see what people in general think of the topic and help us to achieve an answer to our research question.

The personal points that were shared optionally in questions 1,2,3,4, and 7 and obligatory in questions 5 and 6; they were not very different as we expected since most of the people talk about how bad poverty is in Mexico and how crime really takes a protagonist role because if the people are poor, then they will try to commit crimes in order to survive and stop being poor since it is the only option as this people do not have education or labor opportunities. This inquiry points really make us considerate what was the real connections between those 2

Comparative table and References

The comparative table compares the point of views and the information that the articles implied. The subquestions were chosen to help in our research as we manipulate their information into something to benefit us in order to cover every topic we wanted.

30 authorities are included with 3 simples subquestions that basically tells us what do they believe or how their articles are orientated. The subquestions chosen were Is there a direct correlation between poverty and crime? Does it blames crime with poverty? Does it implies a connection with corruption, economy, urbanization or education? Finally we added another column that was about to what region was the article to.

The comparative table is shown below (order of the authorities was chosen randomly and does not have an important meaning)

Timeline

We created a timeline of how the opinions and points of views of experts in this area change their minds or at least contemplate more things depending in the time they lived and their time they wrote their articles. This really help us as we now consider that times change and not because an author express himself in a way in this topics in a way that today we considered wrong, it does not mean that. The following timeline shown start since the oldest important authority we find to the most recent one:

This shows how does the answer to our question can variate depending on time and other factors that make our research even more complete, even though they are all expert on the topic, they share different points of views and the associations used also variate with time.

Authorities

There are authors that dedicates their lives to study this particular topics that we are researching and their point of views and opinions are really valuable to us and our research. The following authorities mentioned below are some of what we found in our research and we believed that their research is really important.

Kostas Papaioannou (1925-1981) – Greece
He was a French philosopher of Greek origin. He was also a historian of Greek art. He was a specialist in the work of Hegel, Karl Marx and Marxism in general. He wrote various essays and books, but the one that he talks about our topics is in the European review of economic history. https://academic.oup.com/ereh/article/21/1/1/2911958

Though formed as a Protestant nationalist paper, within two decades and under new owners it had become the voice of British unionism in Ireland. It is no longer marketed as a unionist paper; it presents itself politically as «liberal and progressive», as well as promoting neoliberalism on economic issues. https://www.irishtimes.com/news/poverty-dismissed-as-crime-excuse-1.26143

Jens Andvig & Odd-Helge Fjeldstad – Norway These 2 authors come from Norway and they are both professors in Michelsen University and they which studied poverty and crime and the associate this topic with corruption . https://www.cmi.no/events/462-crime-poverty-and-police-corruption-in-developing

We made a research over 25 authorities but this 5 are really important and we considered this ones as really trustable and great; the other authorities will be mentioned and analyzed in a comparative table and on a timeline showing the years these were redacted.

Conceptual map and elaboration of research question

The first thing we as a team do is find a topic to elaborate a research question to help us achieve our purpose. We use a conceptual map to choose our research topic shown below:

With this topics that we elaborate, we make the decision that crime was the most interested one and the one that we knew more. In the conceptual map the topic and subtopic are colored in blue. This subtopics we elaborate them with research and come up with 2 research questions

What evidence is there aobut a direct correlation between poverty and criminality?

How the people resort to crime only if the costs of committing the crime are lower than the benefits gained?

We establish that the first one was going to be our research questions as it is easier and it is an open question that can expand to whatever limit we put as a team.
